The Obesity Revolution!

The human body can burn two types of fuel: glucose or stored body fat.

 

In the middle of the last century, there was a scientific struggle. Was fat or sugar to blame for cardiovascular disease? Ancel Keys was the champion of the first theory; Professor John Yudkin of the other. Keys won, but not all of the data he used to make his arguments was a fair representation of reality.


Since that time, we’ve spent half a century fearing natural fat, and instead eating more carbs. At the same time, an epidemic of obesity and diabetes has occurred. It’s time to reconsider: maybe Yudkin was right!


Excess calories are NOT the underlying cause of obesity. While cutting calories may cause short-term weight-loss, it’s never a long-term solution because the real, underlying issue hasn't been addressed.


In thinking seriously about the treatment of obesity, there is one important question to answer. What causes weight gain? We think that eating too many calories is the cause. If this were true, then the solution to weight loss is simple. Eat fewer calories.


But we’ve done that for 50 years with no success. We have calorie-counting Apps, books, exercise machines and wearable devices, but the plethora of evidence clearly proves it doesn’t work. Why? Your body doesn’t respond to a sum of calories, as every calorie has a different metabolic impact. 100 calories of broccoli is not equally as ‘fattening’ as 100 calories of white bread, but for the last 50 years, this is the logic we’ve applied to weight management.
