Learn about thriving through menopause
Reclaim control of your
health during menopause
But like many issues relating to health, it’s not your destiny to suffer through menopause. In fact if your overall health is strong, menopause should be nothing but a slight glitch that may not even be noticeable.
Did you know
Women are born with about a million eggs in each ovary. At puberty about 300,000 eggs remain; by the menopause there are no active eggs left.
The word ‘menopause’ comes from the Greek words ‘menos’, meaning month, and ‘pause’, meaning to cease. Menopause means the monthly period stops.
Usually you only know you have had your final menstrual period if you have had no period, for 12 months.
Most women reach menopause between 45 and 55 years of age – the average age of menopause for women in Australia is 51-52 years.

The stages of menopause & ageing
The hormones of particular relevance at menopause are oestrogen and progesterone. The symptoms are created by changes in the levels of these hormones, which usually happen over months or years as you approach menopause.
Perimenopause
The lead-up to the menopause (running out of eggs.) These changes can begin as early as your mid-thirties, where you may start to notice subtle changes in your body. While the shift in hormones is a normal part of the aging process and is eventually experienced by all women.
The menopause
Menopause is the end of menstruation in a woman’s life. It is a natural occurrence at the end of the reproductive years. You will know that menopause has taken place if you have not had any menstrual bleeding for 12 months. Most women reach menopause between the ages of 45 and 55.
Postmenopause
It's important to be aware that the decrease in female hormones after menopause may increase your risk of certain health conditions, so it's important to ensure your diet and lifestyle are adapted accordingly. These conditions include bone loss (osteoporosis), muscle loss (sarcopenia) and an increased risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.
