Post-menopause is a term to describe the time after someone has been through the hormonal transition of menopause. At this stage in life, your reproductive years are behind you and you're no longer ovulating (releasing eggs). The menopausal symptoms you’ve experienced in the past may become milder or disappear completely. However, some people continue to experience menopausal symptoms for up to a decade following menopause.
Post-menopause is the state you will remain in for the rest of your life. Your hormone levels will remain low, and you will no longer ovulate or have a menstrual cycle. It’s important to note that post-menopausal women are at increased risk for certain health conditions, such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia (muscle loss) and cardiovascular disease, so you need to remain diligent in managing your health and lifestyle choices.
Some ongoing post-menopausal symptoms may include:
- Hot flushes
- Vaginal dryness
- Changes in libido
- Dry skin
- Thinning hair
- Urinary incontinence
If your symptoms become more intense or interfere with your daily life, talk with your doctor. They may want to rule out any underlying condition causing these symptoms.
