A recent long-term study found that regularly consuming low- and no-calorie sweeteners, like aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K, and some sugar alcohols, may harm brain health in middle-aged adults. People under 60 who consumed the most of these sweeteners experienced faster decline in thinking, memory, and verbal skills, similar to about 1.6 years of extra brain aging. The effects were even stronger in people with diabetes.
The study suggests that these sweeteners, often seen as a âsafeâ sugar alternative, might not be harmless, especially if used daily.Â
The research highlights that what we eat in midlife can affect our brain health decades later, so itâs wise to limit artificial sweetener intake.
