The Most Unhealthy Health Foods

When is a muffin a healthy treat? I can say with absolute certainty – Never.


It’s a cake, called a muffin because it’s in a particular shape, yes, but it also sounds healthier when it isn’t.

It’s like marketing Kombucha as the wonder drink to restore your gut health when the bought varieties have either sugar or artificial sugar and flavouring added. So, is it healthy? No, it’s just a diet soft drink. It tastes nice because of the additives needed for you to buy it but those ingredients will have a significant impact on your health.

I don’t care that all these products exist. I just hate that they’re masquerading as something they’re not. Protein bars aren’t healthy, they’re confectionary, nut butters aren’t better for us than butter, they’re rancid blobs of fat that are highly inflammatory, and juices are essentially the sugar extracted from the fruit while all the real goodness is thrown in the bin.

We all have to really look at the list of ingredients before consuming these products regardless of how enticing the marketing sounds because they’re very likely to be faux health foods. When the ingredients are unrecognisable, they won’t be as nature intended and that won’t be doing you any benefit.

Until you have a sound foundation of knowledge, we can easily fall prey to clever marketing. There are companies spending hundreds of millions of dollars to find ways to manipulate us. They know the value of a health message so spin their unhealthy product to sell it.

One of my clients recently asked me why she wasn’t getting results so I asked her for more detail about what she was eating. It turned out she was juicing all her vegetables because she doesn’t like eating them and was drinking them instead.

The problem here is that juicing pulverises the fibre so it’s no longer active, no longer curbing the insulin response, no longer making you feel full, no longer feeding the microbiome and sending your insulin through the roof. What it is doing is creating a huge glucose spike, just as it would with a soft drink.

Please watch out for faux health foods. They’re popping up all the time. They may be on trend but they’re not part of any healthy diet.
