Never stop learning! Familiarity breeds complacency

I’ve had a few conversations with members in recent weeks who have done the program previously and returned for a bit of a reboot. We all know how easy it is the become overwhelmed when we have a busy life, so we encourage our member to revisit the ‘safety net’ of the 28-Day program intermittently, as it can really help with mindfulness, structure and resetting goals. Basically reigning in those habits that may have started to creep back in when we weren’t paying attention! This is human, and is to be expected.

 

The one trap that I’d like to draw attention to is that of familiarity, as it often breeds complacency. We all know that we may take our eye off the ball when something becomes familiar, however, in the case of our programs (and most other examples), this is not best practice. You know you can read an interesting book, or listen to a great podcast several times and, each time you take away something new. This is the beauty of intellectual curiosity.

 

In the 28-day programs, we drip-feed information and learnings each and every day. It’s a lot of information – a bit like the instruction manual for your body that you didn’t receive! This education is fortified with live webinars, conversations in your community forum, support from myself and the team, and an extensive library of blogs, videos and other content. Even though I’ve been working in this industry for almost 40 years, have published six books and created the entire AstonRX platform from scratch, I’d be disappointed if I didn’t learn something new about this topic EVERYDAY.

 

What concerns me is that you may take in around 10-20% of the knowledge imparted in each program. We retain some and we may forget some. If you take that same 10-20% (or less) into the next program, but now you’re not fully engaged with the information available because you’ve told yourself you already know it, you’re cheating yourself out of the opportunity to absorb that little bit more each and every time.

 

My advice? Stay curious! Those members who engage fully, ask questions and tackle each day with enthusiasm and purpose will always reap the best results. This is true of most of the challenges in life.
